Adventures in Photography – North Norfolk Coast
27th – 29th May 2022
The North Norfolk Coast is one of my favourite locations in East Anglia. It is an area that is close to my heart having spent many happy weekends here as a child. The coastal fringes, tiny creeks and sandy beaches have a nostalgic feel where time seems to stands still and life among the villages feels much the same as it always has done.
This weekend workshop was my first in Norfolk and was based around the coastal village of Blakeney where I had spent many happy days as a child. For the workshop we stayed in The Blakeney Manor Hotel which was welcoming and very comfortable and most importantly right on the waterfront so we didn’t have far to go for a sunrise.
The weekend began with a compositional photo walk around Blakeney followed by image critique, dinner and a sunset shoot across the marsh. The following day dawned bright and early with a sunrise shoot at 4am. Despite the struggle with the early start it was well worth getting up for and we were treated to some lovely colour and light.
After breakfast we headed over to Cley to photograph its iconic windmill which stands of the edge of a tiny creek amongst the reeds. The wind had picked up by this time and we had some lovely clouds building in the sky. This enabled us to practice with some longer exposures to blur some of the foreground foliage and give a more painterly feel to our images.
Our next stop was Morston Quay where we spent some time photographing the boats before heading over to Holme Dunes to work with textures on the beach and the sunlight on the dunes.
Our final location on the Saturday was Thornham harbour which we visited just before sunset.
The second day of the workshop focused on Old Hunstanton beach with its colourful cliffs, old ship wreck and interesting beach. Unfortunately the weather had taken a turn for the worse and we arrived in rain and strong winds. However after battling with the conditions for a while the sun finally came out and we spent a productive couple of hours photographing this interesting beach before saying our goodbyes and heading home.
Comments from workshop clients
“I cannot recommend Gill Moon’s Norfolk workshop highly enough. Gill took us to several different locations along the North Norfolk coast throughout Friday afternoon and evening to Sunday morning. I got very sunburnt on the Saturday and battled a force 10 gale with torrential rain along Old Hunstanton beach on the Sunday! The members of the group could not have been better company and the atmosphere throughout was fun, instructive and fun! Gill managed to be everywhere with everyone giving guidance, encouragement and praise in equal measure. Highly recommended and I am looking forward to the next opportunity. Thank you Gill and all my other workshop members. We started as strangers and finished as friends.”
“Many thanks for organising an excellent weekend at Blakeney. Great fun and many thanks for your very kind help in my getting good images”
“Thanks so much for a workshop so inspiring I’ve bought some filters (!). I really enjoyed everything, even the rain.”
“Thank you for the wonderful Norfolk weekend workshop. The group was just the right size and your advice, suggestions and critique was very much appreciated. The places you took us too were all great locations and tested all of us with varying degrees of experience in the group, and being at the bottom end of that experience i was worried i may not keep up but i was soon reassured and in the swing of it and am now looking through all my photos with a critical eye. I cannot wait to join you on another, hopefully in the not too distant future. If anyone reads this and is wary they may not know enough, think again, Gill will ensure you have a great time and enjoy your photos.”
I am planning to run this workshop again next in October 2022 and May 2023. There will be 6 places available for each weekend and I am running a pre registration for both events. If you would like to come along you can register now and reserve a space without leaving a deposit. The price will be similar to this years at £650. Deposits will be collected in August. Registering reserves you a space but is not binding and there is no obligation to continue with your booking. Please email me if you would like to reserve a space.
These images were all taken by this years workshop participants. They are all very different and I love how each location inspires something different for each photographer.
