Back in June 2020 I was contacted by a production company Curve Media who were looking to make a tv programme about the Suffolk Coast with presenter Kate Humble. They were looking for a local photographer or artist who could talk about the Suffolk landscape and impart a few tips to Kate on how to approach photography with a mobile phone.
As a local landscape photographer it is not every day that you get offered a slot on tv so I jumped at the chance and after some consultation and decision making filming was set for the afternoon of 19th July in Walberswick.
The day dawned grey and cold and by the afternoon hadn’t improved all that much. This, I felt, was pretty typical of my luck. It was now a challenge to find some interesting compositions which looked good in flat light. I was hoping that the unseasonably grey weather would mean that Walberswick would be fairly deserted but unfortunately this wasn’t the case and we arrived in Ferry Road Car Park to find the beach and river front heaving with people.
After meeting Kate and Alexis and having a little scout around we settled on a fairly quiet spot just along from the ferry crossing and set about filming a short piece in which I talked about my photography and what the Suffolk Coast meant to me. We then had fun while I suggested ways Kate could improve her picture making using compositional techniques with her mobile phone.
The whole experience was huge fun. Everyone was really professional and Kate was so good at putting me at ease that it was easy to forget there was a camera pointing at us all afternoon. As time wore on even the sun put in an obliging appearance and transformed the landscape with some much more appealing summer light.
The Suffolk leg of Kate Humbles Coastal Britain will be aired on Channel 5 on Friday 12th March at 8pm.
