Islay Light

Port Ellen, Islay

Carraig Fhada, the square lighthouse, just outside Port Ellen is a famous landmark on Islay. It was commissioned in 1832 by Walter Frederick Campbell in memory of his wife Lady Ellenor Campbell. It stands in a fantastic setting at the edge of Kilnaughton Bay and watches over vessels coming in and out of Port Ellen.

The lighthouse stands at the end of a rocky outcrop and can be reached by a small bridge and narrow walkway along the rocks. Walk along the headland above and soak up the atmosphere of the place, the aquamarine seas and the gorgeous display of wild flowers.
